Thank You Emails/Letters After Callback
Hello!
Am I supposed to send a thank you email to each partner that I interviewed with during my callback, or mail a thank you letter to the Recruiting Department, or both? My school did not provide much guidance on what is most appropriate, so I'd appreciate anyone's help here!
Thanks!

They're not necessary, but if you're sending them, send them to your interviewers, not recruiting. Make sure to proofread because though they can help, they can hurt, too!hrvcqrv wrote:Hello!

Thanks! So I would send the thank you as an email, and not a handwritten letter?ek5dn wrote:They're not necessary, but if you're sending them, send them to your interviewers, not recruiting. Make sure to proofread because though they can help, they can hurt, too!hrvcqrv wrote:Hello!

I think these are totally unnecessary, and feel contrived. But a colleague of mine was ranting about how people don't send them. Shrug.
If you are going to send them, as others have said, do proofread!

I co-sign this. I literally tell interviewing students to not send me one because I think they're stupid. 20 minutes of my time is not THAT valuable.patentlitigatrix wrote:I think these are totally unnecessary, and feel contrived. Not required, but if you send something, send it to interviewers, not recruiting. And keep it short and sweet, not contrived. None of this BS about "The callback reaffirmed my desire to pursue the position of associate at Jones, Davis LLP and I think my skills would be an asset to the firm." You might also consider sending one to your screener interviewer ("really enjoyed meeting Joe, Sally, and Bill on my callback") because sometimes they played a role in setting those up.

I heard thank you emails are a bad idea.

So far, thank you emails have allowed me to keep in touch with associates I really clicked with.Genius wrote:I heard thank you emails are a bad idea.
I agree that they shouldn't be contrived, but if you mention something really interesting that came up in your interview and you feel that you really got along with the person, then I think it could be helpful to send one. But again, I understand how a generic thank you email with 0% effort could actually work against you

Re: Thank You Emails/Letters After Callback
From my experience, a lot of older lawyers appreciate a handwritten thank you letter. But I wouldn't write one for interviews. A thank you email would suffice for that imo.Anonymous User wrote:Email. No one does handwritten anymore

They won't affect your chances at all. So just know if you do them it's for your own peace of mind, not because they matter.

Re: Thank You Emails/Letters After Callback
I have heard from some (albeit a small minority) of lawyers that they consider lack of a thank you note automatic grounds for a 'no' vote. Based on that alone, I always did handwritten thank yous to each lawyer and, in some cases, the recruiting manager. Obviously be very careful in avoiding typos.
