How does Quinn's 3L OCI work?

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jul 24, 2016 9:19 pm

This is either the 1st or 2nd year (for my school, at least) where Quinn will be coming to OCI to interview 3Ls for FT positions but not 2Ls for SAs.

Unlike some other lit-heavy firms, they don't "require" LR membership, fed clerkships, etc. That said, how competitive will their FT positions be? Are their FT positions basically "reserved" for 2LSAs who did lit elsewhere for a summer but figure that Quinn does it better?

They scrapped most of their summer program to save money and are now poaching students at 3L OCI who have done their summer elsewhere. While Quinn won't require Williams and Connolly grades, you'll likely need grades/stats as good as it would have taken to get a 2L summer offer.

Some classmates I've talked to (who did biglaw SAs coming from T-14) are going to give Quinn a look for the $35k signing bonus, so it's more than just thinking Quinn does it better.

And what grades would those be, coming out of HYS?

I'm at a V10 looking to switch, but I'm only top third-ish at MVB. Longshot?

I know 1Ls who have gotten interviews for Quinn 2L SA through mass mailing... so it doesn't seem they've totally scrapped

They haven't. Each office gets 1 SA still. I said most in the above post.

I don't.

Re: HYS, my impression is that it's easiest from Harvard. I don't know if they cut as much slack for S students for some reason. Also think there's a real preference for CLS/NYU over MVB. Not sure about Penn.

FWIW, I work at Quinn and I went to V. Wasn't close to top third at OCI (may 40% ish). 1 year of WE between College and 1L.

Sorry, I'm going to keep the office anon. People would pretty easily be able to figure out who I was if I told you. I'm a junior associate also, but I think the general sentiment is that lateral hiring is going to be up with our new recruiting model.

Why would it be easiest from Harvard, compared to Yale or Stanford?
And how easy is easy? LR + federal clerkship isn't exactly a walk in the park.

Because John Quinn, Kathleen Sullivan and a plurality of the attorneys at Quinn went to Harvard.

When I did OCI at Harvard five years ago, the common wisdom was that you needed 4ish H's to get a callback. Not sure if that's changed. I'd be shocked if you needed LR (from any school, honestly) or a federal clerkship. I know a guy who went to Georgetown and had top 5% grades and no LR who got an offer there.

Just do top 5% at a T14, nbd. Isn't 4H's a BFD in terms of grade cutoffs? After WLRK/Susman etc check in at 7+ H's, S&C at 6, GDC at 5, Quinn clocks in at 4? That's more competitive than any of the V10's not already mentioned.

You probably need to be in the top 40-45% of the class after 1L, yeah. The grade cutoff might actually be 3, but in any event, it's more grade-selective than most firms.

Screener interview last week, but radio silence ever since. Is this typical?
