Rising 3L in non-NYC city. Should I email alums at NYC firms to "chat" about their firms?

I'm currently working in a city far from NYC. It's about 3 weeks before 3L OCI begins; some NYC firms who are primarily there for 2Ls will have slots open for 3Ls interviewing for FT positions.

As hard as it is to get someone to go to bat for you after meeting someone for half an hour in person, I'd imagine it'd be even harder when they can't even put a face to your name if all you do is talk into a phone or trade emails.

That said, is it worthwhile to email alums to tell them "I've emailed an app to your HR/plan to meet you at OCI; I'd appreciate it if you had a few minutes as I'd like to learn more about your firm"?

Is that a good way to build familiarity so that, if I meet them at their OCI space, I can say "so and so suggested that I..." so that I don't come off as wasting their time that they'd rather spend wooing 2Ls who have multiple options?
