OCS Advisor: "Don't Mass Mail Yet"
Median grades @ T20. Career advisor told me not to mass mail yet and to focus on OCI because other firms won't even begin hiring until later. Is this an instance where I just ignore my advisor? TCR on TLS is to MM, so my advisor confused me a bit. Thanks for the input.

Good to know OCS gives shitty advice across the board. Ignore them. Some firms have already started interviewing.

my school's CSO told me not to do OCI with bigfirms bcuz my grades were at median. All my friends with median got jobs. I want to kill her but first kill her dog and husband infront of her.

Your CSO gave you extremely dumb/bad advice. You can and should ignore it.

if anything you're a behind the curve on massmailing. I'd get on it ASAP.

My understanding of career service office people is that they are lazy, and want to do as little work as possible.

This time last year I had interviews through mass mailing that led to callback interviews the first week of August. TLS >>> CSO.

There's also this weird protective element OCPs tend to have over OCI where 1) they want to be able to report that students netted their jobs through the school's OCI, which they can't do if it's obtained through a MM process, and 2) they're afraid firms won't actually dole out offers or seriously consider as many candidates at OCI if they've already got offers pending to other students from the school coming into the process.
Are they wrong about these things? Not entirely. But, as is often repeated, their job is to get as many students as possible a job, not to get you the most options or "ideal" job you want. I'd always keep that in mind when taking advice from OCP.

the only acceptable explanation here is that your advisor thought you were referencing mid or smaller firms, in which case her advice would be accurate. but for big firms? you should have started already

I'll second this point. To me it's bizarre, but it seems like career services guards their OCI process like a rabid dog (sometimes), and does not like you reaching out to firms beforehand.Vexed wrote:There's also this weird protective element OCPs tend to have over OCI where 1) they want to be able to report that students netted their jobs through the school's OCI, which they can't do if it's obtained through a MM process, and 2) they're afraid firms won't actually dole out offers or seriously consider as many candidates at OCI if they've already got offers pending to other students from the school coming into the process.

My CSO told me something similar. If I had listened I wouldn't have 3 CB next week in my target market. Hoping for a pre OCI offer so I can cancel 90%-100% of my interviews and maybe have an extra 2 weeks at home.

If this is Vandy, then yes, you should ignore your advisor.Anonymous User wrote:Is this an instance where I just ignore my advisor?

This is probably from self-interest and part of the general CSO campaign against pre-OCI interviews.
