NYC Lit -- how easy to change firms as a 3L

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 18, 2016 10:50 pm

Finishing up with my 2L summer at a top-band lit shop in NYC. I like my firm a lot, but would like to re-explore a few other firms, particularly two peer firms that gave me offers last summer. I don't want to go do OCI again (and don't have these firms available via 3L OCI at my school, anyway).

Can anyone speak to the ease of regaining offers from such firms, and getting placed into the general lit group? I.e. is it generally a pretty sure thing, do I need to go through cbs again, just shoot an email to recruiting, etc.? Also, my grades did drop significantly during 2L (~a tenth and a half), but I did have extenuating circumstances that explain this to some extent, if that means anything.

Thanks for any advice, and please don't quote.

Not necessarily easy for a particular firm. As long as u have an offeru should for sure be able to move somewhere. But, 3L hiring is really predicated on need much more than 2L summers. I wasn't able to even get my foot in the door at some places I had turned down 2L offers. You get a lot of "Sorry, but we're full"

But, there will always be openings somewhere or other if you really want to move

This was my experience as well. If they have a need to bring in more 1st years in the group then you have a chance. Luckily, I was told last year by a couple top firms that they were intentionally having smaller summer classes and hiring more 3Ls than they had traditionally. I only interviewed for corporate positions though, so I can't speak to lit.

I think emailing recruiting directly and explaining your situation / why them now would be a good first step.
