massmailing partners does not work
This is sort of a PSA. Over the last couple of weeks, I have sent roughly 30-35 applications. For the most part, I also contacted the partner directly to apply for a position in their particular department. No luck.

Idk, but you should take it seriously. 2/35 is not a bad hit rate for mass mailing.Anonymous User wrote:is this serious or cereal?Anonymous User wrote:Send more.Anonymous User wrote:This is sort of a PSA. That said, I always liked to email the recruiting coordinator rather than partners.

Maybe I'm missing something but why are you contacting partners? That's annoying.

Seriously. Firms have recruiting contacts for a reason.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Maybe I'm missing something but why are you contacting partners? That's annoying.

Re: massmailing partners don't work
Just some alternative anecdata, IIRC I got a few screeners and at least one direct-to-CB by MMing partners. I believe I first applied to recruiting contacts who referred me to the website, after which at some point, assuming all was lost, I emailed the relevant practice group head, who forwarded to the same recruiters with directions to interview me. This was in the context of applying from a school from another region, to offices with large class sizes, where contact could never have otherwise occurred. In such situations, I think it's OK to be a bit more bold, granted you are per se being really annoying.
In other words, within reason, and after getting effective dings going through the formal channels, I think this can be worth your time.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you know or meet those partners to whom you sent your application? Or was it a cold-email?Anonymous User wrote:Just some alternative anecdata, IIRC I got a few screeners and at least one direct-to-CB by MMing partners. When mass mailing, do you attach a separate cover letter in a pdf form or state it in your email body?

Re: massmailing partners don't work
OP here. I think I made a mistake in sending multiple application emails to several partners in a single firm. I did more research and apparently no single partner makes hiring decision in isolation, and they likely just sort the email and forward it to recruiting. I am sure they all forwarded it to recruitment and the recruiter was probably "WTF IS THIS GUY/GIRL" with 5 different forwards from partners. I did not realize how the process worked and now that I do I can totally see how annoying as F that could be. I feel bad and stupid.
There goes 35 firms I could have had a better shot at.

Don't sweat it, lesson learned. It's all a numbers game anyway.Anonymous User wrote:OP here. I think I made a mistake in sending multiple application emails to several partners in a single firm. OP, what are your numbers?
Most attys u email forward to recruiting (which could be either good or no benefit), & stats really seem to drive response rate.

I had success cold emailing partners. I only targeted alums from my undergrad/law school. VAST majority were no response, then the next biggest chunk was "no" but I ended up with a straight to offer, 2 CB-->one offer. Probably sent out about 40-60.

Re: massmailing partners don't work
I knew several people who had success cold emailing partners/associates at firms. They were usually alumni granted, but people would usually get some sort of response, whether a short phone call or just forwarded things along. Also, 35 applications is really not that many for mass mailing either. I probably mass mailed 125+ when I was in that phase and probably only got a handful of interviews from that, no callbacks. I got lucky at our OCI, but it's entirely a numbers game.

I landed a V100 as a 3L mass mailing managing partners or partners that went to my UG/ was on my LR. It only takes one and I don't really care if I annoyed 100+ partners in the process.

Re: massmailing partners don't work
what size firm were your straight offer and 2 CB from? Can you give a vague description of your academic achievement, ranking of school, and what you said in the cover? (I am assuming this was post-grad search right?)nothingtosee wrote:I had success cold emailing partners. I only targeted alums from my undergrad/law school. Did you tailor your MM to this partner specifically?Anonymous User wrote:so i just got a partner respond to my email to say that he would love to have me on but that their incoming class is too full. he even offered to help me in the future for any job openings.

I think its clear that MM doesn't work when its a shot in the dark. You need a focused approach, the right targets, the right kind of letter, the right kind of resume. Without that its just wasted time.

If you are 1 year out of LS, do you still include a transcript with your app? Technically, you'd be applying as a lateral, not SA.

Mass mailing partners do not work?
If I was a partner and got an email from someone with just as bad a handle on grammar as you, I too would click to delete.

for what it's worth i mm'd multiple partners in 1 department. one of them responded saying s/he will forward my email to the head partner in that department then casually dropped "i think u already sent him an email as well." im just like... wtf how do u even know this? Do they all share incoming emails?

Re: massmailing partners don't work
Have you also sent cold emails to associates? Since I am trying to get a job in a different state than where my school is located, I have a hard time finding partners at biglaws. I'd love to apply to up to V100.nothingtosee wrote:I had success cold emailing partners. I only targeted alums from my undergrad/law school.
