Biglaw firm wants 3 references
Apply for 2017, mass mailed a firm and they got back asking for 3 references...does it matter who I get them from? A bit discouraged because I don't think I can get three references in the next few weeks.

Do you not have any professors/1L summer internship people you could ask?
Also that's pretty weird that they're asking for 3 references. Never heard of that before.

Same which is why I wasn't ready. Can't upload my app to Perkins Coie online application system until I also upload 3 references.

Isn't a reference different from a Letter of Rec? A reference shouldn't be too hard to obtain, assuming you've built up good relations with some of your professors. You'd just need to upload their contact information in case someone calls or emails them.

Really, I didn't think there was a difference.

I thought a reference was just a name/contact info for them to reach out to if need be. A letter of rec is an actual letter recommending you for a position. The former should be easy enough to generate so long as you ask permission from that person first.

Re: Biglaw firm wants 3 references
it matters a bit who you get. 3 family members probably won't be a good look. in general, they're looking for previous employers and profs (your LRW prof if possible). it's only a little awkward asking your current (1L) boss to be a reference but they should be cool with it. explain to them this is just for reference, not a LoR.
also, if it's not immediately obvious, clear it with them before listing them.

Yes, I forgot to include this. Never put someone down for a reference without asking their permission first.1styearlateral wrote:The former should be easy enough to generate so long as you ask permission from that person first.

People are correct - you just need contact info, not actual letters. You should have references lined up just in case anyway.Anonymous User wrote:Really, I didn't think there was a difference.

"Hey XYZ I'm applying for a position at [ ] law firm. I really enjoyed working with you/being in your class/etc. Would you mind if I marked you down as a reference on the job application?" Probably good to attach your resume too for them to pick up some easy talking points. Very common occurrence, should take 1-2 days at most to find 3 people you've worked with or professors you've liked over the years, not a few weeks.

Putting together a reference sheet is a good idea for any job search. Many won't want it, but some will.
