Marijuana and shrooms in biglaw
I am currently an associate in a Vault firm, in a state that has not legalized marijuana. I have been reading Marlon James and got interested in Rastafarian culture. I never smoked in HS or college, but I am curious and want to try it out. I have a friend who can safely supply and teach me the basics. I was wondering, how much of a risk does this entail for my legal career? If I was arrested and/or convicted for possession, will the typical V100 firm fire me? Or is it something more along the lines of a DUI (bad but not fatal) or is it even more innocuous than that (like speeding)? Are there big law attorneys on TLS who smoke and can offer input? Given all that I hear about attorneys and cocaine, I imagine the risks of getting caught are possibly quite low. (For the record, I have no desire to try anything as hardcore as cocaine, and the marijuana is more for experimentation than long-term use.)
Also a while back I read some Alan Watts and got interested in LSD. Since that's quite difficult and risky to obtain, I thought I might like to try shrooms instead. In terms of the risk analysis, that's comparable to weed, no?

calling flame.
I can't fathom someone going to law school, getting a job at a firm, and who can't figure this out.

OP here. I had a sheltered upbringing. I don't think I've even seen pot in real life before. I'm not looking for a textbook or statutory answer, just a practical assessment of the risks involved. Some risk is tolerable.Barack O'Drama wrote:calling flame.

I mean I've never smoked/never will, but have been around it plenty. I dont really find it strange that OP hasn't smoked, but his prude-like questions are definitely abnormal.

O i am laffin. OP, congrats on leaving the Mormon faith for Rastafarianism. Yes, a possession conviction is roughly the same as speeding. Possession with intent to distribute is even lighter. You should bring it up subtly around the office and see who wants to hot box the conference room.clshopeful wrote:''convicted of possession''
Serious response: does your law firm drug test? If not, do you think maybe there's a reason for that? Law firms drug test less than maybe any other industry because they only care about the end product, not whether you smoke on your own time. Just don't be an idiot and let it affect your work and don't get caught.

Well, assuming this is not flame, I think you got some good answers. Don't be dumb; make sure you get it from someone you know/trust. Avoid smoking and driving until you know how it will affect you. And don't let it mess with your work. I think you'll be fine.

OP,
For the record, your post jumped the flame shark in the second sentence.
Anyway, if any of you kids out there are wondering if smoking weed will get you in trouble, the answer is "no." Don't smoke it in public or in your car. But if you smoke it in your (or someone else's) home, it'll just be one of the dozens of illegal things you do in a year that neither the state nor your law firm will care about.
