Switching to lit after 2l SA

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jul 03, 2016 7:01 am

Hi All,

I am a student at CCN, prob around 15%ish. I'm currently doing corp work at a V10's foreign office. Assuming I get an offer here, how hard would it be to switch to lit, either at the same firm(in one of their US offices) or at a different V10/V20? ( I'm using the designations as a general reference, I know some V20 corp firms are not as good for litigation, etc)

In terms of going back to the States, my circumstances have changed (got engaged, fiance goes to school in US), so I have a story of why I don't want to stay in the foreign office. In terms of switching to litigation, I will like it more. I had a background in finance and I assumed I would enjoy transactional work more than litigation. However, I had a lit internship during my Fall of 2L year and during my 1L summer, and I enjoyed those much more than transactional work, so I can tell that story.

In terms of strategy, should I just e-mail all V20 firms? Some of these firms gave me offers for 2L SA, which I turned down, but the offers came after I expressed interest in corporate work. When I e-mail them, should I let them know straight away about my interest in litigation now? The point is that if I can't get lit at any of these firms, I'd rather do corporate work at my current firm. Should I let e-mail firms where I had a CB, but no offer for 2l SA?

Finally, assuming I get an offer at my current firm, what's the best strategy for trying to switch to a US office and to litigation(firm does lit as well as transactional)

Any thoughts? Especially on applying to firms I didn't get an offer after CB, and trying to switch to lit at my current firm, even though the SA in the foreign office is strictly transactional
