Help me out a bit folks. I visited with some people in a firm that do this. Some of them said they were all gunning for PEMA out of school.
Here are some rumors I have heard: M&A generalist can get you in a place where you haven't done much substantive work after 3-4 years biglaw and you don't have great exit options. I am wondering if PEMA may give you a chance to make some more connections and have some better exit options.
And, how in the heck do these people know in law school that they really want to do PEMA? I am still riding the lit/transactional fence so hard I feel the cedar points from the fence digging into my backside.

Re: Private Equity M&A (PEMA)
Private Equity M&A is basically the same thing as general M&A. The only real difference is it is a little easier to make connections, but also PE shops are much smaller so they have fewer spots.yogotti wrote:Help me out a bit folks. The reality is if you don't do shit to educate yourself on the industry, but rather just sit back and let the work show up from partners, you will get no where BC you won't understand the business. Doesn't matter which M&A group you are in. If you work GenMA or PEG-MA but take the time to understand what's going on - I'm talking the financial/business/strategic side - you'll get a lot further in your career when it comes to this. Source: Spent my pre-law school career at an IBank doing M&A then went to a PEG. Set to start at a firm doing M&A and PEG, but might jump back to an IBank before I start at the firm BC why not.
