Akin Gump DC, Lobbying?
How do you break into lobbying? Is being a SA in the DC office enough?

Not even close. Most hires for lobbying are laterals, not entry-level associates. I do not even think that is "a thing," if you will.Anonymous User wrote:How do you break into lobbying? Is being a SA in the DC office enough?
To be a lobbyist, you have to have connections and access. It helps if you are a former Congressperson or Senator (lol at a SA in DC being enough; look at its recent hires for its lobbying practice, namely, Kay Hagan, a former U.S. Senator). Just being a SA is not giving you any connections; you bring pretty much nothing to the table that is attractive to them for its lobbying practice. If you just got hired to be a drone doing lit or corporate, connections really wouldn't matter; they just want an intelligent hard-worker that they can burn and churn for a few years. Being a lobbyist pretty much has nothing to do with practicing law and is just about greasing the wheels. The best way to get in would be to actually go work on the Hill for several years, make connections and a name for yourself. Have you done that?
SA for DC Akin Gump is a great opportunity, so enjoy, I just would not bank on anything in lobbying for several years, if ever.

Hi there, I'm at Akin in DC. After your summer, go work on the Hill. Whenever the opportunity arises, transition to a position that puts you in contact with more legislators and legislators' direct reports. Develop an expertise in some important niche. When all the important people in that niche like you: boom, you're eligible to become a lobbyist.
