Going from school ranked 40-60 to a Vault50 Firm?
I have two questions, but first some background. I am first in my class at a school ranked in the 40-60 range. I just finished my first year. I had the highest score and CALI'd 7/10 classes I took my first year. I have a market-paying SA this summer in my home secondary market in the midwest.
(1) While I like the firm I'm at, I am considering my options for fall OCI. Does anyone have experience or anecdotal evidence of someone at a lower ranked school getting into a V50 firm? I don't want to be in New York, but could consider Chicago, DC, or smaller offices of big firms in other major cities in the midwest.
(2) How much would clerking for a federal circuit court for a year help me get to those firms?

I've heard of people getting V6-V17, V21-V50 firms with those credentials.

This isn't exactly true. V13-V16 are only possible from a school ranked 37 or better (or, strangely enough, ranked 62-74 but excluding 67 and 71- go figure).wiz wrote:I've heard of people getting V6-V17, V21-V50 firms with those credentials.
(I know this is splitting hairs, I just want to make sure the OP has the most accurate information available)
OP- Just mass blast those apps and see what happens. Worst they do is reject you.

The V5 have strict policies and will not hire from below T16.wiz wrote:I've heard of people getting V6-V17, V21-V50 firms with those credentials.
Op, if you are top of your class, things will depend more on your ability to interview and market you aim.

you should play the interview process (and mass mailing process) out, but if you want to end up in your home secondary market in the long term, youd probably be a fool to trade that for this. im trying to go from a V50 firm to a secondary and having a shitload of trouble.

This isn't completely accurate.Pokemon wrote:The V5 have strict policies and will not hire from below T16.wiz wrote:I've heard of people getting V6-V17, V21-V50 firms with those credentials.

V3 actually only go T10 UNLESS you're T11 - T14 top 10% OR T15-16 top 5%. V4-6 will actually dip as low as T21 but you better have the grades (unless you have moot court and journal, in which case they might go for less than top 5% but only for T16-19. Lol, just lol GW).

I don't really care much about being at a V5. I'm looking more at V10-50 range. I have at least some connection through my school with Sidley Austin, Jones Day, and Covington Burling.Capitol_Idea wrote:This isn't completely accurate.Pokemon wrote:The V5 have strict policies and will not hire from below T16.wiz wrote:I've heard of people getting V6-V17, V21-V50 firms with those credentials.

You are going about this all wrong. Folks w your number-schools 40-60- should ONLY apply to v3-6 or v22-31. Honestly idk why this is the case, but the numbers for people in your position have played out in this exact fashion almost annually

I figured any firm above V10 would not even consider me.RaceJudicata wrote:You are going about this all wrong. Folks w your number-schools 40-60- should ONLY apply to v3-6 or v22-31. Dude, people are messing with you.(because the answer to your question is obvious if you use the forum search tool) Massmail in July to as many firms as you can and you'll be fine. You'll get plenty of interviews. But I wouldn't get too focused on meaningless Vault rankings.
If it makes you feel better, my school fell into the same range as yours and I got interviews with firms ranging from the V5 on down. Just keep in mind that it might be difficult to get a SA in certain secondary markets.

Ohh... thanks. Obviously I spend all my time studying not hanging out on law school forums.lawman84 wrote:Dude, people are messing with you.(because the answer to your question is obvious if you use the forum search tool) Massmail in July to as many firms as you can and you'll be fine. Good comeback and all, but the fact that you didn't instantly pick up on the sarcasm is a little disconcerting. Good thing you "CALId 7/10 classes" I guess...lanieh05406 wrote:Ohh... thanks. Kidding aside, if you are first in your class at a T1 you will be highly competitive for any firm that comes to your school's OCI and any firm that is willing to hire from your school, including V5s.

The most absurd part of it is it sounds like op killed it in law school, wanted to be in his hometown, got a gig with the best firm in that town... And is now dissatisfied because he found out something called Vault ranks firms
