It's true that trust fund kids pouring in from CT and DE are a real problem (rising rent for the last decade, COL, general dickish tendencies). Along with the new biking fad, deport those fuckers back to Portland
It takes some wit to figure out where and how to live if you're not being bankrolled but it is not impossible. COL/salary gap is real, but regarding OP, when people start complaining about NYC, it's usually because they're feeling left out. Find something to join, or get used to being alone.
OP hasn't even been there a week. And he lives in Jersey!!!
OP needs time to cook

Doesn't really seem like that's the case based on the descriptions. It actually sounds like a borderline unlivable hellhole.

Have faith in the hyperbolic 2nd hand descriptions you are reading from anonymous strangers on the internet, and do not move there

There is no doubt in my mind that New York is the most absurdly dirty, unhygenic cesspool I've ever been in. It literally boggles the mind and 'how clean do you think NYC is?' has become my short-form for asking people from New York if they've ever seen, well, any other culture or life experience. I don't know if there's something in the water that makes people forget to take showers, wear too many layers on humid days and forget how to throw trash away but if New York was dropped in the middle of Japan that entire country would immediately and without hesitation commit mass suicide out of sheer shame. Why America hasn't done the same is a mystery but, then again, we're also the country that doesn't believe in global warming so it seems kind of fitting.

I've spent some time at every 1T school, probably spent about 6 months at each, top 5% at all of them, 180 lsat for probably about 10 years, then 179 for 5 years, but if I lived in NY I'd just commit suicide out of sheer shame

I laughed out loud at this. Sorry.
I mean, what did you expect? I can see the filth coming as a surprise to some people, but if you've lived in major cities like you say, it really shouldn't. I can't think of a major city in the world that isn't pretty dirty. London and Paris are filthy. San Francisco and LA are filthy. Maybe Chicago and DC are clean in comparison, but I'd hardly call them clean.
There's no reason the climate, crowds, or expense should be any surprise whatsoever unless you just went in totally blind having done no research. I guess the magnitude of each could be surprising, but still.
I mean, it sucks, because you either love New York or you hate it. There's not much middle ground. And it sounds like you just hate it.
Tokyo, Kyoto, Zurich, Munich, Vienna, Singapore (obviously), Oslo and more. Being a big city doesn't have to mean filthy

Oslo has a population of around 600,000. Zurich has a population of less than 400,000.

NYC isn't even particularly dirty. Some people think it is because they see all the trash bags lying out at night, but that's just how the trash pickup has alway worked over there. Most small businesses and residences don't use trash cans like in other cities but just leave the bags out.

Now that I've lived somewhere with alleys I gotta say that the trash thing is legitimately gross.

Maybe check out neighborhoods outside of Manhattan. It's different, and may not have a lot of attributes you mentioned you hate.
dm1919 wrote:If you don't like the city, then, to be blunt, you should just leave. There's enough people here already and we can do without you.
Sincerely,
A New Yorker
Perfectly illustrated. People here seem to all hate each other and seem to be miserable, but they just don't know it.
You don't realize how shitty the people in NYC are until you leave and wonder why everywhere else in the US treats you so well.
There's also a sense of elitism. I think being in the center of it all gives people a sense of importance. "We're New Yorkers. You can't hang? Get out" seems to be pretty good at illustrating this attitude. Sorry dude but "liking NYC" doesn't make you hot shit.
That's not to say that NYC sucks in general. It just isn't for everyone. But people shouldn't give someone shit just because they're acknowledging they hate NYC.
There's a lot of shit in New York, I agree. Shitty people, hot shit, cold shit, bullshit, shit on a stick, shit in the park. You lived in New York three years and you really understand New York's essence: shit, shit, shit, shit, shit.

It can be a hassle to get to Manhattan sometimes, but I thought it had the feel of a small town and was nice to get away to on weekends.
I can attest to this.

OP here.
Slight digression, but if I accept an offer at the end of the summer as a fall back, how bad is it if I back out later? Is that a common thing?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
