Non-Legal Resume
Current V5 junio corporate associate in NYC.
After a fun filled weekend of back to back all nighters, I am once again exploring my options outside of law.
I was a liberal arts major in undergrad, graduated with honors from CCN and I have no real work experience outside of law.
I am hoping to find resources re: crafting a resume for non legal positions that emphasize/characterize the strengths ex-lawyers can bring to the table.
I am now 90% sure I'll be leaving the law in the next year, and I'm willing to hustle to do it, so I am looking to tell my story in a compelling way such that employers take the risk on a smart though under qualified applicant.
Thanks

Re: Non-Legal Resume
I wish I had a better idea. I'd like to believe I could excel in a sort of business development or corporate development position. I am a people person (something I feel is lost in the legal world). I would love to get in early at a startup and wear a lot of different hats - but I know that is a pipe dream.h2go wrote:Kinda depends what you want to do...

I also hope this serves as notice to everyone going through the OCI process, looking to enter BigLaw etc...turn back and run.
If you told me 6 years ago I would go CCN -> NYC v5 I would have been ecstatic. Now, I'll do just about anything to get out. This profession sucks.

I'm in a similar position....as are I think most biglawyers. I personally know at least 10 people at my firm who quit biglaw with no job in the past couple of years. This profession is terrible. I'm considering going back to using my undergrad degree (although I can't remember anything so would probably need to go for a master's.)Anonymous User wrote:I also hope this serves as notice to everyone going through the OCI process, looking to enter BigLaw etc...turn back and run.

The money in biglaw isn't good either for the hours worked and the soul suckiness. Law school was a big mistake for me IMO.
Unless you REALLY REALLY like working all the time, and not having a life, don't go into biglaw.

Re: Non-Legal Resume
Why don't you first try another type of law in a smaller market? The life of a corporate NYC V5 is very different from an regulatory lawyer's in a v100 in Richmond VA for instance. I imagine you would have success applying to lateral from a V5, even switching practice areas. Just another idea....

Figure out what sort of position you want and bullshit buzzwords/responsibilities/achievements that align with that. This is how the rest of the world hunts for jobs.

Does anyone have any suggested roles I should look into? Just looking for a starting point...ballouttacontrol wrote:Figure out what sort of position you want and bullshit buzzwords/responsibilities/achievements that align with that. This is how the rest of the world hunts for jobs.

Re: Non-Legal Resume
Consulting and corporate development have been receptive to me as a 1L and 2L student in law school.
Are you good at math?
Also you can break your experience out into either a) deals or b) functions that you performed.
Like main bullet, then sub bullets
Private equity due diligence work
-Conducted supplier contract due diligence for private equity client in $100m transaction resulting in x% reduction in value of target.
- sub-bullet 2
-sub-bullet 3
Bullet 2.

I am not bad at math, but I have no demonstrable quantitative skill. I have considered brushing up on some quant stuff (taking online courses, excel etc.) but I don't know if that's helpful or not.
What type of business development jobs have you been seeing?
Do consulting firms interview 1st-2nd year biglaw associates or has that ship sailed?
Thanks for your input
