Graduating from T6, mediocre grades (slightly below 3.3), starting at NY Big Law with the most renowned practice group within the firm. My grades actually improved a little from 1L year (totally bombed 1L year - if not for that, I would've ended up with 3.3-3.4).
If I wanted to lateral as a junior associate, with under 3 years of experience, how difficult do you think it will be? I'm not even thinking of super grade-conscious firms, of course, but something from NY Big Law would be nice.
I understand that the general consensus regarding this topic on this forum is "it depends," but I would appreciate any feedback on my particular situations!

If you want better advice than "it depends", you should give some more details of what you want. What practice area are you doing ("most renowned practice" is not particularly helpful)? Are you trying to trade up in "prestige"? Do you want to go in house? Do you want to stay in NY? It's fairly common for firms to hire lateral candidates who they would not have hired as entry level or SA candidates due to practice area needs. It will be entirely firm and practice dependent. You'll have a better chance doing whatever (probably corporate) niche practice happens to be hot in 2-3 years than doing general commercial lit or something, but then again you could find yourself in a niche that turns out to be totally dead in 2-3 years.
