1L at GULC, no summer gig yet...
Hi folks! My cousin is wrapping up his 1L year at GULC and he still has not secured a summer internship. Any strategies for this late in the game? He is open to anything-paid, unpaid, whatever. He majored in a hard science in undergrad and completed some STEM graduate credits. Any listings would be greatly appreciated.

If it helps, he is interested in practicing IP law after graduation.

Seriously, I don't get how a STEM major at GULC can't find ANYTHING for the summer. Either he has like all B- or does a strip tease at his interviews...

There are a lot of places that are probably willing to take on volunteers:
legal aid organizations, district attorney office, public defender office, ect.
If the student isn't from the Georgetown area, they should look for places to volunteer near their hometown.

He's not from the D.C. area originally. He's from a large northeastern city.kellyfrost wrote:There are a lot of places that are probably willing to take on volunteers:

I have no idea what his grades are like.

This isn't helpful. It's rough out there. There's competition for even unpaid indentured servitude.h2go wrote:Seriously, I don't get how a STEM major at GULC can't find ANYTHING for the summer. Either he has like all B- or does a strip tease at his interviews...
Is RA all right for OCI for IP firms?

Re: 1L at GULC, no summer gig yet...
It really isn't that rough for IP. There are a ton of boutique IP firms in the DC area that take interns. Only explanation for why he doesn't have a position is either (1) he only sent out like 5 applications (2) he has terrible grades (but pretty sure you can still land something with ~3.0 from GULC) or (3) he is unbelievably bad at interviewing (and you have to be pretty bad to not get anything). I'm guessing its probably 1. He could also have a problem if by STEM you mean something more atypical for IP like agricultural sciences or something.Manali wrote:This isn't helpful. For OCI, no one cares if you RA 1L summer as long as you can be normal during an interview and your grades are decent.

The reason that they don't have a position lined up is because they don't exist...h2go wrote:It really isn't that rough for IP. There are a ton of boutique IP firms in the DC area that take interns. Curious what "completed some STEM graduate credits" means. Did he start an MS and bail? Just take some grad classes as an undergrad? Is he doing a JD/MS and has completed a few masters credits already? If the first, there's a chance that signals to interviewers a lack of commitment (whether or not that's fair) and could be screwing him. Could be wrong, others should weigh in, but it seems like something that could spook employers.

Well no, I'm going to agree with h2go b/c I go to GULC and I can attest that there are quite a number of postings for IP. If you have a technical background, then you're almost golden. I know people who got a 1L SA summer much easier than a normal 1L SA summer b/c they applied specifically for IP. I doubt there's anything left now, considering it is pretty late in the game for an IP law firm gig.Anonymous User wrote:The reason that they don't have a position lined up is because they don't exist...h2go wrote:It really isn't that rough for IP. I don't know if he didn't send out enough resumes or just had bad luck or maybe a bit of everything, but that's all water under the bridge now. I would just tell him to apply to anything and everything on Symplicity and go to the career offices, both OCI and OPICs and see if they know any places he can still apply to. Some RA positions might still be open, so he can try to get one of those. I think it should be okay to have RA for your 1L summer and still interview well for OCI. If he's nervous, maybe add on some other probono legal work if he can find some during the summer. Likely he won't find a paid gig, but most don't anyway regardless of when they apply and get their internship offer.

What undergraduate degree does your cousin have?
1L IP Prosecution positions want Engineering Undergrads or Masters/PhD for Non-Engineering (Bio/Chem/etc). Prosecution positions tend to emphasize pre-law school grades more than 1L grades.
1L IP Litigation positions are extremely rare, even for students in the Top 10%. Only a number of firms hire 1Ls for IP Lit positions and they are normally reserved for truly exceptional candidates.
As for the "STEM graduate credits:" if you're cousin dropped out of a PhD program, that will reflect poorly on him and probably be a huge-red flag if his 1L grades weren't top notch.

I heard that the firm Nelson & Murdock LLP is hiring. As I recall, they are looking for 1Ls who are interested in Intellectual Property law. Is your cousin willing to work in New York?

I have no idea of the circumstances of why he had to leave his STEM graduate program.
