How do I know if a headhunter is "legit"?
I received a call today from a headhunter who asked me if I was interested in a lateral opportunity at a V5 in a completely different market. He claimed to have decades of experience as a recruiter, but when I googled him, his purported company, email address, and phone number, nothing turned up. Is it considered normal for a headhunter to have zero online presence whatsoever? He asked me to send my resume and transcript to his gmail account, but I am kind of wary of identity theft and the like.

Also, to add: I'm actually REALLY interested in the firm and the market, so I'm inclined to take the chance and send my stuff in. Just wanted a sanity check before I do so since I'm very junior and have no experience with recruiters.

Some headhunters do like to, in fact, keep a low online presence for sake of anonymity. I would ask to speak over the phone to get a better idea of this is someone that is legitimate or not.
In addition, you can offer to provide a resume (which basically is public knowledge anyways based on your firm bio), but hold off on the transcript. I don't think that would hurt you at all.

Run away. Any decent recruiter will have at least a decent online presence seeing how important it is to their job. No way I would trust this guy.Anonymous User wrote:No.Abbie Doobie wrote:is he at least on linkedin?

What does someone gain by lying that they're a headhunter?

I know of a (tech) company that hired people to contact members of their staff claiming to be a headhunter. They used this ruse to identify members of the staff that were more interested in considering other jobs.DCfilterDC wrote:What does someone gain by lying that they're a headhunter?
