Confused. Help me por favor

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Apr 20, 2016 8:25 pm

I'm a transfer student at a new school. Think vandy, UT, ucla etc. Using my old marks from my 1L school I landed a v100 gig for 2L summer in the new schools geographic area. I however really do not like the city I got the job in. The issue here is that my grades at my new institution are dismal. Like bottom 1/3 dismal. In the event they don't go up this semester, any ideas on how I can try and market myself towards other firms / my desired market (NYC). If it helps I have significant ties to Manhattan.

Given your current grades the only responsible advice is to work as you can this summer to ensure you get an offer from your current firm. Bottom third grades are not going to make you very marketable at all for 3L OCI and NY doesn't care about ties. As a caution, your grades are probably low enough that firms would be justified in giving a no-offer for grades, so you really need to impress this summer. I wouldn't think about anything else until you have a long-term offer from your current firm.

Do firms seriously no offer for a transcript full of Bs and B+s?

Probably not. But if you get on the bad side of anyone there they will just use it as extra fodder to no offer you. 3L OCI is not going to work out for you though with those grades, so your best bet is to get an offer and work for a few years in this market, as much as you hate it. You can then try to lateral into NYC as then your grades won't matter as much.

rough spot to be in. Above poster is right. You've got no chance at another firm unless you pull up those grades.

So study hard man! Also, definitely crush this summer.

edit: acutally i lied. I just remembered I had a friend who was bottom 20% at gtown who got a v100 in NYC during 3L spring. So its totally unfair for me to say its not possible. it;s possible... but unlikely. And im not sure if t14 is some magic distinction that makes grades matter less to firms.

If you're at UT, pad that 3L schedule with as many off-the-curve classes as you can. Take writing seminars where the prof gave everyone As the previous year, that sort of thing.

At my firm at least, a transfer is definitely more likely to get no offered for a grade drop. This is partially just mathematical (a non-transfer has grades/credits from 1L so their GPA won't shift as much as from poor 2L grades as someone who only has those 2L grades) and, frankly, it makes it look like you can't really hack it. Basically, a non-transfer who wasn't borderline is probably going to stay above the firm's hiring guidelines even when they don't do well, whereas you might enter the summer with a GPA that is lower than the firm's guidelines.

Study hard for finals and take your SA seriously.

If this is UT, I saw some transfer students do well but also some who got absolutely creamed.
