First Year Associate Start Date @ Cooley

Post by parvaticatil » Sun Apr 17, 2016 3:14 pm

I'm trying to make some plans unfortunately pretty far in advance (I'm finishing 2L now), and I'm hoping to find out at least approximately when Cooley's (or similar's) first year associates start in the fall. Anyone have an idea?

Thank you!

What plans are you trying to make this far in advance?

Depending on what your plans are, the best advice might be to spend the time leading up to your start date focused on your job, and ultimately, your career.

In the alternative, you could contact someone at Cooley??

You can always contact your recruiting coordinator at the firm.

Cooley's start date is in mid-October this year (have friends going there). Not sure how consistent that is though.

I would ask the recruiter. However, don't be surprised if they have no idea. Seems like most firms don't set their starting dates til Spring of that year.

Thanks so much, I mostly just wanted to confirm it wasn't way earlier than I thought it would be. Might follow up with a recruiter if I get more nervous about it.

Why the hostility? Perfectly reasonable question, and tons of good reasons to want to know the start date. Also, what do you spend your day doing while - as you say - spending "the time leading up to your start date focused on your job?"

reading law review relevant to your practice area. Reading local court rules. Browsing practice manuals relevant to your practice area or the rules of evidence. Meal prepping. Making sure your work clothes wardrobe is stocked and ready to go. Some people even make practice drives or train rides from their home to the office at different times of the day or different days to gauge the commute time. Making sure your personal budget and finances are in order (especially a game plan to attack student loans if you have them) ect. You could do a lot to leading up to your start date focused on your job.

A person looking for advice on drinking in the office has, typically, already started their job.

Was going to mock this, then got to the part about practice drives/train rides and realized it must be a troll.

There is really just no way you could be serious about this. And if you are, I can't help you.

I typically practice my commute run when I first start a new job. It is important to become familiar with the route, check out alternate routes, traffic flow, and the overall time it takes to do the commute.

I would strongly advise OP not to prep their meals 18 months before their start date.

I second KellyFrost's sage advice regarding practicing travel routes. It might be wise to consider other possible routes you may frequently travel, i.e. office to the courthouse (state and federal), office to client's office, or, finally, office to restaurants you, other associates, or partners may wish to dine at.
