Any firm that hosts an event and serves grill your own hotdogs isn't worth fitting into.

I just assumed big firms had roller grills with hot dogs and taquitos in the break room.

What's the common wisdom on 1L SAs at 100% offer firms--it's my understanding that the bar for 1Ls is set pretty low, but that the firm also feels no obligation to make you an offer for 2L summer. Is that about right? What difference is there usually between offer rates for 2Ls as opposed to 1Ls?

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2016
Texas seems a bit more blasé about it given the splitting mentality of the market and the more robust 1L market generally. Otherwise, I'd say since they invested in you, theyd want you back unless you really screwed up.Anonymous User wrote:What's the common wisdom on 1L SAs at 100% offer firms--it's my understanding that the bar for 1Ls is set pretty low, but that the firm also feels no obligation to make you an offer for 2L summer. Also, on NALP you can see what number of 2Ls were returns. This of course is not a proxy for their offer rate as many 1Ls follow the conventional (and prudent) wisdom of doing OCI, and some will not return.

FWIW, I agree with you.Anonymous User wrote:Same anon. I was a 1L, didn't do OCI, went back as a 2L and I am now an associate. Great decision for me, and I know 2 poeple in my 1L class who did OCI and switched firms. One has already left their new firm, and the other is less than thrilled with their new firm.SplitMyPants wrote:^^^hides behind anon to give shitty advice
1L anon, definitely do OCI
Like I said, if you don't like your firm, of course do OCI. But if there is nothing wrong with your firm... why do OCI and then switch to a firm you have not spent a summer at? If someone is even asking the question then it's clear they don't have a strong desire to do OCI. Take your offer, keep in touch with the people you liked at your firm, and then go on vacation. It worked out very very well for me so just offering at input from someone who has actually been through the whole process.

Thinking the same thing, but if I get something for a select number of people (say 3) is that faux pas not to get stuff for the other associates/partners I've done work for who I'm also close with on a personal level?umichman wrote:Gifts for associate or partner mentor?

Woohoo can't believe only 7 more days left in the office. Not worried about getting offered. Think they need all the corporate associates they can get. Trying to enjoy the last few events and all the free lunches I can score.

Will give you guys a funny, related story.
Suck-up summer at my big NYC firm bought a top partner a box of chocolates worth ~$150. Summer decides to expense chocolates, using an associate's name. Associate is contacted to verify; knows nothing. Partner is told story. Ruh roh.

what kinda gift are you going to get? it should seem like a really stupid idea even when its just a vague gift, but as soon as you start thinking about what you would actually get them, it should sound incredibly fucking stupid.Shyguy4 wrote:Thinking the same thing, but if I get something for a select number of people (say 3) is that faux pas not to get stuff for the other associates/partners I've done work for who I'm also close with on a personal level?umichman wrote:Gifts for associate or partner mentor?
