I have a buddy who somehow managed to land a DoD Assistant General Counsel position coming out of school. This buddy attends a TTT and has little to no valuable summer experience.

I'm jealous, won't lie, anyone know how this could be pulled off?

A lot of federal agencies don't care where you go to school. And an AGC position likely means he will be doing personnel and contracting stuff, not really anything sexy.

An AGC with the DoD doesn't do personnel and not just contracting "stuff." I'm not sure what your definition of sexy is, but the AGC for DoD is quite a bit better than you are giving it credit for. I think this is why OP made a thread about it...

I'm not saying it's a bad job at all, but AGCs for the feds are basically in-house lawyers and someone has to deal with employment lawsuits and hiring and firing and the like. This person may not be doing that stuff, but someone has to. And my point was that maybe this person got the job because it's not as sexy as it sounds.

I'd say it's just because some federal employees who may have done the hiring maybe didn't care about the TTT status or maybe they were TTT grads themselves.

Also, the student may have had prior to law school experience that may have looked good on paper.

Or just right timing.

I do employment stuff, Nony. It's way sexy.

Probably networked/ was introduced to the right person- connections (even nepotistic ones) exist in government too.
I don't get surprised by this sort of thing, in fact, most attorney's I know that are at non vault places had some sort of connection. Obviously its not ALWAYS the case, but sometimes it is

This could be true. However, the odds that one person knows every person in the hiring panel are very low. And if someone has points over you, no matter how much one person likes you, you won't get hired.

Is this buddy a minority? Is he a veteran? Is he disabled? I only ask because of government hiring practices.

Or, maybe you buddy is a great networker, tremendous interviewer, and has great grades. Maybe he has experience in something specific they are looking for. Maybe he is extremely talented. Maybe he displays raw talent like a first round draft pick?

Where you go to school doesn't always dictate the future, instead it helps open doors. But keep in mind, some people are capable of opening doors on their own, and others need help.
