Tech Transactions Prospects

I'm considering taking a position at an NYC V50 firm in their tech transactions group. What are the career prospects like for that specialty? I imagine the in-house opportunities are pretty solid - do people think that will last? Is it as stable as other practice areas?

It depends on how the firm carves out the practice from general corporate work. At my current firm, tech trans handles all of the drafting/negotiating of commercial agreements, so like the customer, supplier, reseller, licensing, partnership, etc. agreements. This is probably one of the best practices for moving in house because that's what a lot of in-house attorneys do on a day to day basis.

The average inhouse lawyer does this kind of work. There is a place for this work in Biglaw, but its definitely a small practice. Usually companies might farm this out to a firm to do a standard master template for some of the more sophisticated volume deals that the company is involved in. Once that template is complete then its likely the company is having its own internal lawyers make any and all further modifications to it or ancillary documents related to it.

It's a great field to be in if you intend to go in-house. I think it would be a tough field to crack as a partner in a law firm.
