1L Summer Job Dates

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Mar 28, 2016 12:32 am

Hi,

I will be doing a 1L summer judicial internship with a CoA judge. The internship is only six weeks long. I am only working the 6 weeks this summer, and spending the rest of the time at home with my family. It just so happens that the six weeks last from mid-May to July 1, which is a Friday. My question is, would it be OK for me to put my summer judicial internship on my resume with the date as May-July 2016. Technically I would not be lying since I did work 1 day in July. On the one hand I don't want to be dinged at OCI for only working 6 weeks in my 1L summer, which would be more obvious if I wrote the date as May-June. But on the other hand, would it look bad if I got asked at OCI about how long the program was, or if they somehow found out it was 6 weeks and I only worked 1 day in July, and I had written May-July? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I had an SA that ended on July 03, and I had it as "May - July" on my resume for OCI. Shouldn't be a problem—it's not like you're being deceitful. No one will ask about it, but if they do you can just say that your OCS told you to do it that way on your resume.

You could just say "Summer" instead of listing specific months.(of course, that will look out of place if the rest of your jobs on your resume all list specific months)

Also, you're not going to be rejected from biglaw firms for only working 6 weeks during 1L summer. They don't care.

But yea, you did technically work in July so I don't see a big issue with you putting May-July. Just don't lie about it if asked.

Is there some reason that you don't have something lined up for the other half of the summer? I'd list it as May-July, but I think getting experience for the sake of learning from it is as important as getting the experience for the sake of communicating that you have it.

Is this just apathy or is there some personal reason that you need to spend that time doing something else?

"Summer 2016"

Problem solved. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Anon, I doubt its apathy. Have you ever tried looking for a job, as a 1L, and the first thing you mention to them is that you only need employment for the month of July? Easier said than done. OP - Enjoy your 6 weeks CoA stint, and more importantly, enjoy your summer pre-oci.

Completely fine. My SA ended 8/1 and the firm described my tenure as "May-August" so if they don't care after the fact, don't see why they would feel deceived for you doing the same.
