Do's and Don't's for Summer SA?

Post by Rule104(a) » Sun Mar 27, 2016 4:53 pm

Do:
- go to social events
-be friendly
-proof read

Don't:
- complain
- hook up with anyone
- be "that guy" at a summer event
- miss deadlines

Am I missing anything?

Do:

--Act intellectually curious and engaged in the work. Even if you aren't a huge fan, acting enthusiastic and having the right attitude goes a long way.
--Network and meet people. Make connections during the summer that you can build upon when you arrive as a 1st year associate
--Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions to clarify things you don't understand. Better you ask at the onset then just make assumptions that could come back to hurt you (though, at the onset, there will be things you wouldn't even realize to ask, but don't sweat it too much)

Don't

--Be "that guy" at any point. Of course, don't be weird at social events, but you need to ensure that you aren't the weird guy in the office either. Its easier said than done because the weird guy is usually the last to realize that he is the weird guy
--Turn down work unless you absolutely have to. At the beginning, every piece of work is an opportunity. So unless you are truly slammed (which is rare for a summer), don't turn things down.
--Act disinterested. Its really just he corollary to the above. As a summer, you are likely to rotate or otherwise try out new areas. And you may not like some of those new areas. The key is to never let that show. At the beginning, its MUCH more about attitude than skill. Having a good attitude is something that is literally always within your control. Nail down those fixed items so that, when the variable items don't go your way (i.e. you make some mistake you didn't realize you are making, and couldn't have realized beforehand), it doesn't bite you as much.
