NY CLE Time Extension
Does anyone have any experience requesting an extension of time to complete CLE requirements in NY? Newly admitted attorneys in NY have to complete certain CLE requirements in each of their first two years of practice. I'm about one year and week out from admission and have unfortunately not completed the requirements for the first year. I understand that it is possible to make a retroactive request. What sort of things do people say for "undue hardship or extenuating circumstances" and plans for completing the requirement?

Stupid question since I should know, but how/when do we actually report CLE compliance? Like, do we wait for the NY Bar to reach out about it with some form? Do we certify compliance online?

Re: NY CLE Time Extension
You certify compliance when you re-register as an attorney. The Bar will send you a registration form in the mail asking for you to give them $375, update your contact info, and certify compliance. You'll usually receive this form around 1 month before your birthday during your second year as an attorney, and it must be returned within 1 month after your birthday. You can either return the form in the mail, or go to the website listed on it. If your birthday is before your 2-year anniversary and you haven't finished your CLE requirements yet don't worry -- just certify to the number that you've completed so far, and then actually complete them by your 2-year anniversary.Anonymous User wrote:Stupid question since I should know, but how/when do we actually report CLE compliance? Re: NY CLE Time Extension
I've gotten an extension, at least twice in my career from NY. Its really not a big deal. Go on the OCA website and follow the links. You can request the extension there. Explain about your busy case load, etc. Keep it short - 1 to 2 paragraphs AT MOST. Do it a day or two before (1 to 2 weeks is optimal) and you'll be fine. They will generally extend you up to about 90-days.
The post above mine is correct about reporting compliance.
Now do your CLEs you delinquent!!!
