Grade cut offs

Post by tbird » Mon Mar 07, 2016 2:03 am

I have read quite a few people refer to their firm's OCI or lateral grade cut offs. Are those based on raw gpa's or percentile rank among the class? For those of you with first hand knowledge, what are firms setting their cut offs at? I assume the school makes a big difference, but is it safe to assume that if you are Order of the Coif or top 10% at a t30 school that you would make the grade cut off at most firms?

1. "Grade cut-offs," to the extent they exist at the firm(s) in question, are entirely school-specific and are based on percentile rank, not GPA.

2. It's not "safe" to assume top 10% at a t30 school would get you into the door at most NYC biglaw firms, no. However, top 10% at a t30 school probably makes you competitive/safe at most firms located within the same region as your school, yes. This assumes you have ties to the area.
