How to tactfully ask this?
A solo practitioner in my area is planning on hiring someone in November after bar results. Is there any way to tactfully ask what the salary/benefits would be? The application process is a bit time consuming - three recommendations from former employers, for example - and I'd rather not make that effort if the salary/benefits are going to be significantly less than some of the other jobs I have applications out for.

Just ask politely for the salary/range, no need to beat around the bush. But note that some employers may be evasive and say it's up for negotiation or something like that.
