1L Summer Job at Family's Firm
I've been offered a position at a well-respected firm in the area that I intend to work in after my graduation. I go to a T2 school and am in approximately the top 33% of my class. That being said, my grandfather was a partner at this approximately thirty years ago and his name is still included in the firm's title. My concern is whether future employers will look on my 1L summer employment at this firm as a negative during the hiring process. Would I be better suited finding work elsewhere? The firm focuses in what I want to specialize in and is in the area I intend to work. Additionally, it is a very well-respected firm that could hopefully connect me with other firms I could potentially work at 2L summer.

This will not hurt you, particularly if you are interviewing with similarly situated firms.
If anything it will help you as you interview with your grandfathers former colleagues or younger partners who looked up to him.

These two statements don't make any sense? If you intend to work at the firm after graduation, what future employers would look at this as a negative?GuyMontag wrote:I've been offered a position at a well-respected firm in the area that I intend to work in after my graduation. . . . I had no intention to humblebrag, my apologies. I am not anticipating this 1L internship to lead to future employment at this specific firm. I would be working in the city that I want to live in after I graduate. My concern is that other employers in this specific city will see that I spent my 1L summer working for a firm that my family's last name is included in and view the job as something that was handed to me and an indication of entitlement/laziness.muskies970 wrote:These two statements don't make any sense?
