Credit score and background check affecting SA offer?

Post by ohhai » Tue Mar 01, 2016 7:19 pm

I received an offer from a V25 firm. Part of the paperwork was a credit check. I have a score of 666 or 650 (depending on report). I have credit card debt from losing a job a few years ago and then not earning much (perks of the gratifying job). The one other thing is a judgment for a debt from 2012 -- I received medical treatment and the bills were sent to the wrong address for about 6 months. I have no criminal record or anything else otherwise blemishing on my record. I haven't heard from the firm confirming all is set and I am wondering if I should be worried. Anyone out there hear of anyone getting their offer rescinded after a credit check with a score like mine?

I can't say this with much authority, but I don't think you'll have any problems. Your credit score is pretty average, so that's nothing to be worried about. If you ultimately paid off or settled the debt from 2012, it's unlikely to be a problem; if it's still outstanding, that might be cause for some concern. Just having a lot of debt shouldn't itself be enough to raise any major flags in your credit report.

FWIW, at the time of my SA background check, I had a credit score in the upper 500s and had no issue.

Do firms care if you have a misdemeanor from a few years back? Disclosed it before I got my offer and no one has said anything

That makes me feel a bit better. I will just sit tight and see what happens.

Thanks for your response! I would ultimately thin the same. We will see. Thanks!

You are just below average with your credit score in U.S. You will be fine. The reason why they ask that question is to see if you are in extreme debt and might have to steal from the company to get by. That is not your situation.
