NLJ 250 Placement 2016?!

Post by wheatbar » Sun Feb 28, 2016 12:55 am

Usually the National Law Journal releases the associate placement at the 250 largest law firms right about now (or earlier - i.e. between February 22-24th normally). Does anyone know if they stopped doing it or will not release it this year? I wonder if they stopped because of the ABA employment statistics data that is now produced every year. It is important to note the NLJ data was important and needed because unlike the ABA data (which comes from the schools themselves and can be manipulated) they actually surveyed the firms to count 1st year ASSOCIATES whereas with the ABA data it can be employees of large firms who are not associates that still get counted (like contract attorneys, recruiters, other ancillary staff, etc.). Any one have info on this? Not sure why they haven't come out yet.

After filing out the ABA questionnaire myself while drunk (and seeing my friend going to a V10 mark "unemployed" cause he-mad about school), I'm starting to regain my faith in NLJ; self-reported data is such a scam.

Then again, many of my most qualified classmates did everything in their power to avoid having to start at an "NLJ250" firm, so that data does a mediocre/poor job of capturing how well each school can actually get people jobs at those firms.

April 7th is the due date, according to (http://www.americanbar.org/groups/legal ... naire.html), so we might not get the results for a while.

That's for schools to report. NLJ always collected results by surveying firms and released the list in February.

it will be really disappointing if the National Law Journal doesn't produce a list this year. The ABA data is not at all reliable because you have no idea what percentage of hires of large firms are actual associates and all of the data is self-reported not coming from the firms themselves.

National law journal just posted the NLJ 100 placement on their website but I can't get around the firewall like I use to before so I can't see it.

The new cutoff makes it hard to compare across years but here is what we know:

1) Columbia 52.26
2) Penn 52.23
3) Chicago 52.04
4) Northwestern 47.02
5) Duke 46.19
6) NYU 44.54
7) Cornell 41.34
8 ) UVA 40.87
9) Stanford 40.72
10) Berkeley 38.13
11) Harvard

Yeah, making it NLJ100 placement instead of 250 cuts out too many firms to be useful

It's ridiculous. Here are some firms that are outside of the top 100 according to this link (which presumably is based off of the NLJ 250/350 data but I'm not 100% sure):

103. Cravath
109. Fried Frank
111. Jenner & Block
121. Schulte Roth & Zabel
137. Cahill Gordon
144. Williams & Connolly
155. Boies
167. Wachtell
210. MTO

Can someone post more that the top ten like maybe top 25 at least or preferably top 50 (or more). It would be much appreciated.

NLJ would probably be better off just incorporating ads instead of requiring membership for this data because obviously this is used most by perspective law students who have no reason to purchase an NLJ membership really except for getting this data.

Paywall is still there. Don't see that anything was changed or removed. If you can see it, can you list the full rankings please?

Yeah, Michigan has been #13 in Biglaw + A3 clerkships each of the last 5 years. Definitely not a part of the elite T12.

"NLJ 100" is dumb
Most of the elite firms aren't even counted.

To be fair, Michigan trails every T14 but GULC every year, by almost any elite jobs metric.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
