GPA, Law School, OCI Offers, Market
I found the legal salary data points very helpful and think it would be just as helpful to have a forum where people specify their law school (or at least range of schools like MVPD, T6, HYS, etc), GPA, and what firms in which markets extending offers to them (or I suppose you could specify a range in Vault rankings like 90-100 if you are really worried about being identified).
For example, you could say Duke Law School, 3.8, Skadden , NY (purely an example, not my experience)

This is consistently useless. Your own school will have historical GPA data (that you will agree not to share) on its students' performance at OCI ... that's your best bet.

Only my school refuses to share it until May.....and I wanted to do some research in the meantime to get an idea of which mixers are actually worth attending, and which are out of reach.cron1834 wrote:This is consistently useless. Edit: whoops, this wasn't supposed to be anonymous

So are you saying they are a massive waste of time?globetrotter659 wrote:Go to the mixers for the free food and drinks.Anonymous User wrote:Only my school refuses to share it until May.....and I wanted to do some research in the meantime to get an idea of which mixers are actually worth attending, and which are out of reach.cron1834 wrote:This is consistently useless. Will they get you an offer? No. Will you learn about the firm? Yes. Perhaps you'll connect well with an associate who you can hit up later before OCI.
That being said, my favorite firm mixer turned out to be my least favorite firm going through OCI.

free food and drinks at a nice venue? ya, total waste of time. they're fun if you don't take them too seriously. it's also possible to actually connect with an associate who can help you out. but for the type of person who thinks free food and drinks is a waste of time, it may be an uphill climbticklemesilly wrote:So are you saying they are a massive waste of time?globetrotter659 wrote:Go to the mixers for the free food and drinks.Anonymous User wrote:Only my school refuses to share it until May.....and I wanted to do some research in the meantime to get an idea of which mixers are actually worth attending, and which are out of reach.cron1834 wrote:This is consistently useless. Eh, as a 1L I'd rather take that hour to hang out with a friend or study. When I'm constantly "on" in class, I want my socializing to not be about sucking up to some associates if it doesn't actually amount to anything. And if I can't socialize, I'd rather invest my time in making good grades.TTTooKewl wrote: free food and drinks at a nice venue? ya, total waste of time. they're fun if you don't take them too seriously. it's also possible to actually connect with an associate who can help you out. but for the type of person who thinks free food and drinks is a waste of time, it may be an uphill climb

Some will be a waste of time, but going in with the goal of non-douchily making connections can pay dividends. The catch is that it's a total crapshoot and you only win by playing the odds.
I landed my summer firm through a combination of meeting someone at a 1L reception who put me in touch with someone else in one of my target groups, as well as some additional networking via other channels.... then I bid the firm highly and went through the standard OCI process. That's a long way of saying 1L receptions alone probably won't get you the job (though it does happen), but they're worthwhile if you go to enough of them and make each one count.
But if you can't tell which firms have brutal gpa floors at your school, just give some specifics and we'll try to help. (The fact that you're asking this question means the way elite firms like Susman and Williams & Connolly are already off the table.)
