In what ranking range do you need to be in order to have a reasonable shot at a DC firm coming out of HYS? What about San Francisco?

You probably just need to be in class, but even that's debatable depending on the prof.

At H, people with 1H/9Ps (this is probably bottom 25%-30%) can get DC and SF firms but striking out from these markets is also very possible with 1H. A lot of it comes down to ties, interviewing skills, and luck. To be a real safe bet, you need about 5H/5Ps, which is above median. It's really a total crapshoot with mediocre grades because there are only a handful of firms in each market that aren't grade selective at YHS so if they don't like you for whatever reason, you're screwed.

The competitive firms in these markets don't always treat "H", "Y", and "S" indistinguishably, as much as they are blocked together on tls (for example, bay area job hunting from Stanford poses different challenges and opportunities). Also counting H's at HLS is a different game from counting H's in quarter system at SLS.
