1L job offer...but out of target market

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jan 19, 2016 12:50 am

Student at a midwest t25 and I've secured a 1l job offer at a financial firm's legal department that pay's very well, enough to let me get through 2l with very little debt. However its outside of my target market, way outside. (Firm is located in Florida and my target market is San Francisco or at least CA). I've got a few interviews lined up with the SF City Attorney and Oakland City Attorney offices but of course they don't pay.

How much is it going to hurt me to go to Florida this summer? My ties to CA include being from there and doing undergrad at Berkeley.

I'd like to add that my advisor advised against it, saying that I won't be able to network with alumni in my target market, but I don't know if giving up less debt is worth the potential to chat with a few local alumni.

I've had 1L summer in the South, and then will complete 2L SA in the North.

Depends on how you spin your story when it comes to OCI.

Also, congrats on having a paying 1L job.

Do you have ties to San Fran? If you do, the story should be easy to spin. The experience from the $$$ job is probably most important in that case.

I'm from San Fran, my home address on my resume is my SF address.

If you are from SF and you went to Berkeley, I don't think you have to go back your 1L summer to show you want to be there long-term. I think going to Florida because you have debt and want to be paid is understandable.
