Baker Botts stands out as one of the few firms that is really struggling.

Otherwise, KE, VE and Latham all have various things to recommend them and you should talk to some associates there to get a real sense of those offices. All you will get from these forums are the same people repeating the same third hand information from 4 years ago.

As someone who practices in Houston, I disagree to some extent about Baker Botts (I worked at one of the other firms mentioned, just left). Their profits fell because of the Gibson pull (a good number of BB partners started the Houston office for GDC). But if you look at the TX charts, noting that BB's corporate group is about (almost exactly) 1/2 the size of V&E (always has been), their TX deal flow is solid on a per lawyer basis and their volume is high because they do large deals. I am not sure about their non-TX offices, but their Houston one is doing just fine based on deal flow as that chart shows. You always need to account for number of lawyers. Also $1.66mm for PPP is still on the higher end for TX firms.

Do y'all have any insight into the cultures at V&E/Latham/Gibson/K&E/BB in Houston?
Obviously I know a bit about K&E's culture because it's pretty famous at this point. V&E's gotten a rap as an old boy's club, but I don't know how accurate that is. Somebody told me recently that Latham parties pretty hard, but that was the first I was hearing of that.

On "culture" questions you really need to try to get a sense of it when you interview. Very difficult for people to give perspective b/c it's one of those things you only really understand if you've worked at a place, and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who has worked at three of these offices in Houston. Within offices practice groups are very distinct re: culture, so it's a good thing to be thinking about but not something you are going to get true insight on.

What is the current rep of NRF Dallas? I know they took serious heat a few yrs ago for no offering a third of their class and there was speculation that that was indicative of serious trouble, but it looks like they offered 9/10 last year which is good I guess. I'm interested in lit fwiw, no TX ties but Dallas is my top choice mkt, followed by Houston
