I'm pretty sure that equity partners would be able to sue the firm in this situation, because not verifying the summer is still in school comes out badly under the business judgment rule. The question is whether the main people making decisions give any weight to the grades or even look at them.

Ya... My question also. Are we talking dropping .3, .1, or just getting one B-/C, etc.?
Depends on school. My buddy from one of the schools just outside of the T14 got no offered bc of getting one bad grade, and everything else was pretty much straight As. Upper T14 ppl they are a little more lenient for. Basically, they have a grade cut to hire from each school, and if u fall below that at any time, bye bye offer.
They're a firm that will no offer at the drop of a hat. Just be aware. In some offices, i have seen actual offer rates around 50% (I think they may find ways to make it appear higher on nalp but I'm not sure about that,, I don't really follow what they do on there. But when I very first started working there, the actual offer % was lower than the one I relied on in nalp). I recommend either taking another offer or at least splitting w someone else, if you're deciding for 2L SA. Not worth the risk, IMHO, when other equally comparable firms have offer rates at like 95%+++

Covington DC didn't ask for grades or make anyone sign a waiver.

He's talking about Baker Botts. I can personally corroborate this from a T14 perspective.BmoreOrLess wrote:Out the firm. Can others comment on this? I find it hard to believe Baker Botts has that low of an offer rate

Re: Does Your Firm Ask For Your Grades?
I go to UT and have heard about lots of TX firms no offering people so I'm guessing that's real
Just don't let your grades drop and then you guys don't have to worry about this stuff. Problem solved.

Baker Botts definitely no offers its fair share of people, and the grade drop thing is 100% true (recruiting will straight up tell you this if you ask), but there are other TX firms that have been far more egregious offenders when it comes to no offering lately.

What about updating the OP to say "Crap guys, who knows? It's all rumor and speculation and threads like this just lead to FIERCELY CONTESTED anecdote battles. Just don't let your grades drop and then you won't have to worry about it"?

Re: Does Your Firm Ask For Your Grades?
Some people would be pissed if they were no-offered just because their grades dropped even though their work during the summer was somewhat decent. And all of this is obviously anecdotal, but it at least gives people an idea of what their firm's overall outlook toward grades may be.BigZuck wrote:Egregious offenders...of grade asking?Anonymous User wrote:Covington DC added, if you guys out the TX firms that are egregious offenders I will add them to the listwiz wrote:Baker Botts definitely no offers its fair share of people, and the grade drop thing is 100% true (recruiting will straight up tell you this if you ask), but there are other TX firms that have been far more egregious offenders when it comes to no offering lately.

Re: Does Your Firm Ask For Your Grades?
it actually gives zero outlook on what a firm's policy may be because there's a good chance that most of the people no-offered for "grade drops" were probably actually no-offered for poor summer work product. Obv there's really no concrete data but I probably wouldn't take a firm's no-offer excuse at face value.
this thread is just so stupid, and so are the rest of them that are similar. how is knowing whether your firm will no-offer for poor performance going to do anything for your life? either keep working in 2L/3L or don't. I can't believe someone's choice of work ethic would actually turn on whether their employer may no-offer you or not. If the economy turns to shit, many firms will probably no-offer the students with huge grade drops anyway (after the ones with shitty work product)

Re: Does Your Firm Ask For Your Grades?
singling out a select few firms that may/may not no-offer because of grade drops is just so fucking dumb. it's also a bad representation since the odds of a huge grade drop by a summer associate @ some top firms are probably v low therefore no real data to report on

But it may still be useful for the firms that don't request grades at all; then 2L/3L's know its one less thing to worry aboutcheaptilts wrote:singling out a select few firms that may/may not no-offer because of grade drops is just so fucking dumb. it's also a bad representation since the odds of a huge grade drop by a summer associate @ some top firms are probably v low therefore no real data to report on

Look, you're not going to get any consensus here. Must firms will ask that you send them a transcript at some point, or they ask you to sign something saying they can pull your grades at any time. Whether they will no offer for a grade drop is anyone's guess. You might get one or two actual attorneys who actually know something about hiring practices to out their specific firm, but given how anon obsessed this website is that's a big, big time long shot. And even then, it'll be like 2 firms, not some exhaustive list.
The only concrete thing you can really grasp on to is to just not let this become an issue at all. Don't let your grades drop. Be selective about the classes you choice. Or don't just blow stuff off. Whatever, just do what you have to do to keep your grades up. And do good work when you're an SA. Just do your best. And try not to worry about stuff so much.

Re: Does Your Firm Ask For Your Grades?
I kind of agree. I mean - chances of it being an issue are pretty low, but why risk it? You don't have to gun 2L and 3L - just don't completely fuck up and you're probably fine.BigZuck wrote:You're not supposed to use anon to hide behind dumb insults you silly billyAnonymous User wrote:Some people would be pissed if they were no-offered just because their grades dropped even though their work during the summer was somewhat decent.
