Average time between interview and offer for 1L summer judicial externships
For 1Ls that applied to judicial externships next summer and already interviewed with the judge/clerks, did you hear back yet? From what I've read on TLS, it seems like most people were offered the position on the spot or the same day. Is that the norm? What's the usual time frame for these things? If I haven't heard back yet, is it safe to assume I didn't get the position? Thanks!

Not necessarily. It's entirely dependent on the judge. Some judges will interview several candidates and then decide. Others will interview one person at a time and will give an offer the same day or at least without bothering to interview anyone else. Because the judge has the final say, you will hear about on-the-spot offers more often than for other types of jobs because there is no hiring committee or boss to run the decision by. Some judges also leave intern hiring mostly or entirely up to their clerks. I had a friend who interviewed with the clerks, never met the judge and got a same day offer. I personally interviewed with a judge right before they were leaving work on a Friday and got an offer the next Thursday.
