1st Year Associate and Yoga Teacher

I am going to be a first year associate next fall (pending bar passage). I am also a certified yoga instructor, and very much enjoy teaching a few classes per week. Is it reasonable to teach twice per week (in the evenings around 7:30 PM) once I'm working, provided that I'm back online afterwards (or back at the office if need be)? My firm is pretty chill, and I'll be doing corp work.

Unfortunately, I think a twice weekly 730pm commitment would be difficult to pull off as a transactional first year. I am a second year corp attorney (in a secondary market, even), and I do not think I could do this.

YMMV, but I would not make any hard commitments like this, at least not until you start working and see what things are like in your individual practice group.

It depends on your firm and market, but probably not. In NYC getting out before 7:30 would be considered "early". And a lot of firms have face time requirement, so you better be in the office even if you don't have anything to do....

You won't really know this until you start working there. Why not teach on the weekend?

I don't see how this is different than going to gym several days a week after work, and lots of people do that. I think this could generally work, especially if you had people who could fill in for you at your yoga class if something came up at work.

Definitely the better alternative. I was just floating the weekday idea to see how much flexibility I might have. I think I will follow the advice of others and just wait to make any firm commitments to my studio after the summer.

You could probably pitch a lawyer yoga group to your firm. I'd definitely go to that, and bet many other people would too.

Why not teach the 5-7am class(es) then head to work? If you are willing to wake up early, this might work.

The rule of thumb is you will have the flexibility to leave at 7:30 almost every day except for the days on which you have made this commitment.

It's a lot easier to reschedule/skip your own gym time at the last minute than to find a teacher who can sub last minute, though, if at 6 pm your tyrannical mid level or partner comes into your office and gives you something that needs to be done by morning.

Right right, I left a job like this just months ago (after only being there for months), but have somehow managed to block out what working in an environment like this is like.

So, as with most things, depends on your firm and the people you work with.
