I'm a current district court clerk in a very far-flung district. I recently sent out some applications for firm jobs in New York. Shortly thereafter, I heard back from a firm seeking to schedule an interview--it hasn't been nearly long enough with no response from the other firms for me to conclude that they are not interested in interviewing with me and have just thrown my application in the trash.
I know that for clerkship interviews it is appropriate to let other judges you have applied to in a city know that you will be there. Is the same true for firm hiring? Because I'm pretty far out, it would be great to cut down the number of trips back and forth.

I honestly don't know what the proper etiquette is in this situation, but I would totally let them know. I don't think you have anything to lose. It's not like they're going to say "oh well we were interested in interviewing you up until you let us know that you would be in town." Surely they would get where you're coming from, and imo it gives them a reason to pull your app out of the stack and make a decision sooner about whether to interview.
