Had a 1L SA and it went well - good fit, good feedback and they asked me to return for 2L summer. What worries me is that the firm hasn't seen any of my grades except for first semester of 1L (median). I had already started the 1L SA when second semester grades (a little below median) came out, and the firm never asked for an update. The next time that I know for certain they'll ask for an update is at the very end of my 2L SA.
Am I paranoid for worrying that at the end of the 2L SA they'll turn around and say "Hey, nice work you did for us these past two summers, but your grades really aren't where we'd like - DING!"?

I was in your position. Did both my SAs already, and my grades did drop b/w 1L and 2L (top 10% to slightly above median). Didn't matter at all.
I think the key is, try and do great work during your 2L SA. Actual work product, even if it is summer associate work, will be vastly more important in determining your career trajectory than your gpa at this point.
