Cover letter - Mention close relative working in same area of law?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Dec 04, 2015 5:15 pm

I'm writing a cover letter in response to a job posting that seeks candidates with a demonstrated interest in a particular area of law. I don't have much to show for a demonstrated interest of my own. However, a member of my immediate family has practiced in that area of law for over 35 years (in the same town, too). Would it be tacky to say that my interest in this area of law is in part because of my immediate family member?

Does the practice fall under litigation or transaction? Of course personal experience/reason is always better. There are a lot of other ways that you can link something you actually did to a practice. Maybe we can throw in a few suggestions that you haven’t thought of based on which side it falls.

It also depends on your relative’s reputation in the field. This matters esp because he/she practices in the same field and market as your interviewer. The person reading the letter might know of him and have a certain impression of him already.

Yes this would be tacky. Your relative's existence says nothing about your interest. If you helped your relative out with their work in this area at some point then sure. If it's just "my aunt does this!" then that sounds frankly kind of desperate.
