Quinn Emanuel's last summer associate class?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Dec 04, 2015 9:18 am

Is 2016 really Quinn Emanuel's last summer associate class? If so, who will be their new associates in 2018 and beyond?

I think they're talking about having very small summer associate classes? I believe the plan to get new associates is to make lateral and 3L hires.

They could use the Patterson Belknap model.

I interviewed with QE this past August and received an offer. They had 2 stages of CBs and offered very few people. Plan is to bring in clerks, laterals, and 3Ls instead of wasting money and creating bogus assignments for SAs. In addition to normal SA comp, they offered a nice bonus to accept the SA position. They are going to treat the few SAs they hire as essentially first years, staffing them on teams and trying to keep them working throughout 3L.

The problem with the Patterson model is that it makes you...well, as irrelevant as Patterson. Not to mention it's way less feasible at Quinn's size.

Quinn could get away with scrapping OCI on the knowledge that enough students gunning for dat preftige would apply in June and July, but now it's apparently expecting them to ditch the firms they summered with and not take any hit on associate quality. Not at all convinced that's going to work.

I can confirm the offer of a very nice bonus for the SA. I didn't hear any mention of having the SA's continue to be staffed on matters through 3L, though it was very evident that SA's would have more interesting work to do because there would be so few of them in each office. I'd be interested to know how many SA's each office ended up hiring.

Quinn Emmanuel offered a $10,000 signing bonus for offerees . . . seriously, in addition to summer compensation, you'd receive $10k at either beginning or end of the summer (i forget which)

Do you get a bar stipend too? because a lot of firms gives more than 10k for that.

I'm talking about 10k for the summer, not 10k to accept an offer to start as an associate

i have no idea about the last q because it's not something that would come up in an interview for 2L employment

The bonus you're referring to must be for next summer, not this past summer, right?

Above is correct. 10k bonus for SA, notwithstanding any future bar stipend. Salaried compensation TBD.

As I recall, the 10k bonus was contingent on "completion of the summer program." That may or may not require the SA's accepting their full-time offer. Either way, its an extra 10k.

I guess we don't really know. I'd assume each domestic office (8) has at least one SA, so anywhere between 8-16 seems reasonable. Idea seems to be to redirect those funds to 3L hiring bonuses and clerk bonuses. One imagines there will be plenty of 3L's who are litigation focused who would drop their SA firm for QE + hiring bonus, and same for clerks if QE is offering a higher bonus. Surely not all of them, but enough to fill the junior associate ranks, which they historically tend to keep pretty lean anyway.
