Starting a legal nonprofit

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Nov 23, 2015 1:31 am

I'm a current PD. I have a love/hate relationship with the work. The love comes from the work itself. The hate stems from the 7-5:30 pm work schedule, the commute, never seeing the sun, etc.

I'm thinking of quitting and forming a 501c3, with the sole sources of business being, initially, conflicts from the local PD offices, and maybe CJA stuff as well. No private clients initially, maybe low-income clients later on. My spouse makes $$$$ and our COL is minuscule, so a poverty income is fine. My goal is to be able to work from home and set my own hours (obviously court is the exception.) Essentially to set up a solo practice that qualifies for PSLF. What are the problems with this plan? Liability insurance? Cost of Westlaw access?

Also really interested in what steps can be taken to get a personal legal non-profit to qualify for PLSF.

Can your wife fund the whole project? If not, you might have to spend a substantial amount of time fundraising. I know a roughly five attorney firm that does this work and one of the five is essentially a full-time fundraiser.

Eta-I didn't see you wanted to work from home. This will cut costs, but things like client-management software, Westlaw, insurance, ect will still add up. I haven't looked into it so I don't know how much, but if you have to do some fundraising that might make this less of a lifestyle option than you think.
