Best way to gain employment in London?
My wife received a lucrative offer to move to London, but has difficulty accepting said offer as I would be jobless. I have spent the past few years doing patent prosecution and have a reg. no. at the USPTO. I am also looking to get barred in NY next July. I am starting to wonder what type of opportunities are there for patent agents/attorneys in London or in Europe. Is there a great demand? Would it be best to find in-house counsel, try a US law firm with international offices and hope for a transfer? Would european law firms need US attorneys?

If you work in London it's best to be registered to practice before the EPO as firms in Europe tend to want people to practice before the EPO rather than the USPTO. However, the test is more difficult than the USPTO's patent bar, and will require more time and money. People at my previous firm (US based) did take the EPO bar with the firm's assistance, but only after several years of practice. I am not sure whether firms would be willing to invest that time and money in a new grad like you rather than hire a European-educated attorney. And being able to transfer offices may take a while - you may not be able to instantaneously join your wife in London. As for in-house, my impulse is that European companies that file patent apps in the US and don't have US offices would rather just use US-based outside counsel than hire a US in-house counsel in London.
That said, you should still dig around and see if there's any opportunities. I am not aware of any, but I have not specifically looked to practice in Europe and so don't know all the possibilities. Maybe someone else here can tell you more.

You might want to post this on RollOnFriday or talk to a Lateral Link recruiter. ROF is a UK law website that is a combination of TLS, Vault and AboveTheLaw all rolled into one. The forums might help you there.
Most US law jobs in London are corporate, for reference. It is rarer to have other U.S. law positions. I'd do some extensive googling and LinkedIn stalking and perhaps talk with your law school alumni development folks to get some names of U.S.-trained lawyers over there. The legal community is relatively small.
Good luck!
