I just received notice that I am a finalist for DOJ EOIR - however, I have an offer from a Pittsburgh Midlaw firm up my sleeve as well. I will take the DOJ position > Midlaw, but I am wondering --- WHAT DO DOJ EOIR CLERKS DO AFTER THE 2 YEAR CLERKSHIP IS UP? Any specific anecdotes or advice is greatly appreciated
My goal is to be assistant chief counsel for DHS ICE OPLA, or DOJ OIL, but Im unsure how rare these are.
Also, how likely is it that I will be able to get a position in DOJ Civil/Crim/NSD after the 2 year clerkship?

When this has come up before, it seems that quite a few of the OCIJ people do end up getting positions within EOIR or other immigration arms of the government (you mentioned ICE - keep in mind that's under DHS, with CBP and USCIS; I've seen a number of positions in DHS advertised, so I think getting into an OGC of one of these agencies is doable). Others have gone on to immigration firms. (Even more) anecdotally I know someone who went OCIJ --> USCIS (he's in an asylum office), and someone who went OCIJ --> legal aid --> USAO.

It's much easier to start in the Government and stay in the Government, then to do private and transition. So I would keep that in mind if what you really want to do is be a Government Immigration Attorney.

My office maintains a spreadsheet on this. I'd say 75% stay in government doing immigration-related work like DHS, OIL, BIA, etc. 10% do other government stuff like USAO. 10% go to private firms (some of which are midlaw or biglaw and not immigration work). 5% go to non-profit/legal aid. This is for a major city, so the experience may be totally different if you're in a very small town.
