How do people find housing for SA?

Post by Tiberius42 » Sun Nov 15, 2015 4:12 pm

I'll be moving across the country for my Summer Associate job and I have no idea where to find a place to stay. I feel like I need a furnished place because lugging my stuff across the country for a few months seems like a bad idea. But where do I find places to rent only for the summer? Did you just look on craigslist for a sublet?

I SA'd before Airbnb really took off, so I cannot speak to that, though I agree it is worth a look. I found housing through Craigslist and college message/swap boards. If you are going to be in a city with universities (most) there are likely going to be a lot of grad students leaving for internships, trips, and travel abroad each summer. You can also use these same resources to rent out your place during the summer assuming you are not moving. I rented my apartment to students from other law schools both summers during school, and it made life so much better in the long run financially.

AirBNB is probably one of the more expensive ways to go. Subletting a furnished place on craigslist worked well for me (it ended up being a law student in the area I was working), and other people I know found student housing that rented out semi-furnished units to students from other schools (George Washington UG in DC, Hastings law student housing in SF, etc).

When you did AirBnB, were you living alone or were you renting a room. I truly hate having roommates. I'll be in san diego and a lot of the ones I'm seeing on airbnb look like they're geared towards a weekend stay rather than a summer long thing. Staying in student housing would be good.

Contact the Deans of Students at the SD law schools and put together a little blurb saying you're from X School, you are going to be in town for SA gig from [date] to [date] and you are working in Y part of San Diego. Ask them to forward it to their 1Ls and 2Ls. I guarantee you'll hit on something. I rented my apt out to a nice gal from a MidWest school who was smart enough to do this. Worked perfect because our dates lined up really well.

Also, I summered in Silicon Valley my first summer, and finding a place was nearly impossible. The rental market there was so hot that no one wanted someone temporary. By a miracle, one of my friends asked her parents if I could live in her childhood bedroom. It was great. And free. And great.

Few questions for NYC -- (a) around what date do people secure housing via AirBnB for the summer? (b) For the most part, are you required to have pay stubs or the like to prove you're able to afford it (and will future SA employment be enough?) (c) I know this is very broad, but any suggestions for particular areas to look for if I'm going to be working on the upper east side? (d) With regard to the law school housing, are these dorms or what?

Appreciate any help

My suggestion is to purchase a local newspaper and look under corporate apts. Prices vary. They are fully furnished (utensils, pots/pans, wi-fi, etc.) and most have a pool. They usually rent by the week or month or longer.

Another idea is to check medical school boards and listings. If you are near a big teaching hospital there are often houses/apartments that rent short term to medical/other students on rotations. You will have roommates, but they are usually studying, and the prices can be super cheap since med students are generally more broke than we are.

I stayed local for my SA, but my firm sent out a TON of emails beforehand about helping people find accommodations - so maybe your firm's recruiting department might point you to some resources?

Also if you're going into DC/NY/LA/SF/Chicago, then there will be law students going elsewhere for their summer that might be amenable to subletting to you for the same time period - how to reach out to these communities is a good question. Here on TLS maybe?

For my 1L summer I reached out to a local law school that put me in touch with some students wanting to sublet their year-long leases for their own summer SAs.

Yep, with my law school .edu email. They also forwarded me a link to a local student "craigslist style" housing page for the university in general. My housemates were all law students who summered local so it was a good vibe, clean, no house parties, everyone on the 9-5 schedule.

Also, try Facebook groups for schools close to your SA. X Law School class of 2017 or whatever. They might have people to point you to.

First, don't panic. You aren't going to get a single hit until March, the earliest. No one is sure of their plans yet. Next semester you will be bombarded by: fellow SAs looking for roommates, classmates with friends who are law students in your target city, randomns posting on your law school face book page, emails from your schools student affairs, and invites to join other schools in your target city's face book page

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
