Asking for a Raise as a Lateral?
I am lateraling as a first-year (will be a second year in Jan) lit associate at a midsize firm to a corp associate at a V40 firm. I took a class year hit as a condition of my employment, and will be paid the same rate as the new 2015 associates. I was wondering if anyone has been successful in negotiating their salary after 6 months-1 yr to an amount that's commensurate with their class year? I'd love to hear your opinion if you have any experience with this or know someone who has done this. Thanks.

Re: Asking for a Raise as a Lateral?
My understanding is that when you start at a lower class-year level it's because your new employer does not believe that you are at the skill level of associates that they have trained (or have been trained at comparable firms) who are in your class-year. Whether or not this is true, I suspect that it is something that's hard to roll-back once it happens.

I have a friend who was recently headhunted for a niche legal field, she was offered a substantial salary (190k) without ever being asked about her current wage. Maybe that’s not how it always works, but that’s how her meeting went.

OP Here: I was able to get the interview by hustling really. I just emailed partners directly and expressed genuine interest in their practice. I'm wondering if I should even try to negotiate a higher salary...CRUNKlestilskin wrote:how'd u get the interview tho? gotta be hard getting the interest of firms when ur resume is covered in litfats provolone wrote:by giving up a class yearCRUNKlestilskin wrote:nice, bro. how'd u pull off the lit /corp switch?Anonymous User wrote:I am lateraling as a first-year (will be a second year in Jan) lit associate at a midsize firm to a corp associate at a V40 firm. This just sounds like a don't bite the hand that feeds you situation.

Granted, I plan on bringing the conversation up only after I've been there for at least 6-9 months.

So she's getting paid as a first year? That doesn't sound that impressive.twenty 8 wrote:I have a friend who was recently headhunted for a niche legal field, she was offered a substantial salary (190k) without ever being asked about her current wage. Re: Asking for a Raise as a Lateral?
You are supposed to do the negotiation at the start. If they don't increase the salary then you ask if they will review after 6 months. Otherwise, firms usually give raises after a year. But some firms might do raises at one time and so it can very depending on when your firms financial year ends. For example, it could be in June. Thus, if its not too late, you gotta ask for that salary bump now, get the most that you can get.Anonymous User wrote:I am lateraling as a first-year (will be a second year in Jan) lit associate at a midsize firm to a corp associate at a V40 firm. I went from corporate to lit. Its not too hard. Legal work is legal work. You just express your interest in that particularly area and hopefully you have had some experience whether in law school or intersnhips that you can point to in the interview. It is also easier to do after a year. You are still fairly new regardless.CRUNKlestilskin wrote:how'd u get the interview tho? gotta be hard getting the interest of firms when ur resume is covered in litfats provolone wrote:by giving up a class yearCRUNKlestilskin wrote:nice, bro. how'd u pull off the lit /corp switch?Anonymous User wrote:I am lateraling as a first-year (will be a second year in Jan) lit associate at a midsize firm to a corp associate at a V40 firm.
