Just got a job at a Labor Union - Taking Q's

Exactly how the headline sounds, I'd like to help fellow graduates who are pro labor land positions. My info: Top 25% of class, 50-100 Level USNWR School.

What exactly do you do? Like, do you defend DFR suits? File NLRB complaints? I see you mention referring everything out, so I'm not sure if this is more of a standard "in house" role or more labor litigation?

State level public union, mainly negotiations for new collective bargaining agreements and unfair labor practice charges at the state level, some grievance work. The DFR's and grievance arbitrations are mostly referred out. I've only worked here around a month but alot of the referring out is because it's a large state and the more senior in-house people are expensive, while most of the grievance work is one offs in far flung areas.

I'm sure this depends on your geographic area and the specific Union to an extent, but how would you describe the culture of your Union?

Hmm, from an outsiders perspective chill. The union head office mirrors the membership, quality work done from 9-5, after that it's your own time. We're expected to have a good standard of living, if that makes sense. Of note is everyone in the office is a true believer in Labor and the Labor movement, raising standards of employment either with management or at their expense. I couldn't see anyone here ever working for management. Then again I believe L&E attorneys make a conscious decision to either go for the standard of living/ beliefs (labor employee side) or with the money (management). Also, it's a white collar union if that helps.

At the moment I'd say most of the membership is satisfied with their salaries.

Yes, I'd say they're justly compensated.
