I'm not sure if anyone on this forum can give you any kind of substantive advice beyond, "who cares?"

Serious question: wouldn't "still looking" have maybe been helpful in this situation? He's a senior partner who likes you. There might have been a shot at getting something, and even if not, he surely knows people who could've gotten you something.

I know what you meant by this, but to the OP: this really isn't how it works.

lol no you shouldn't cover up one stupid lie with an even worse one.

If you really want this guy on your side, you should go to him asap and tell him you lied/why, and that you're interested in his firm. Be prepared 90% it ruins the relationship, but you've already done that to yourself. At least then there's some chance he takes pity on you.

Life lessons.

But at this point, he doesn't know statement#1 is a lie. It'll only come up if my resume somehow lands on his desk and he sees FirmX isn't on it *and* he remembers I said FirmX a year ago.
wut.

How what works? Going with the preemptive "April, my dad..."?
If someone thinks well of you, they're not going to stop thinking well if you because you say you're "still looking" for a summer gig in October. They're not going to not like you anymore because you don't have a job yet.

I think people like this are the reason I didn't have friends in law school.

Well this likely explains why you don't have a job yet.

Why would you do this to yourself?

It never ceases to amaze me just how dumb some "smart" people are. Why would you lie about that in the first place? Instead of said partner thinking "man, this kid must not have it together if he's still mass mailing", it's more likely said partner would think "I like this kid's work ethic, I wonder how I can help him." Most people try to help those they like and perceive as competent. Just my two cents as a 0L.

I dont think hope is lost on this one at all. Keep gunning in class, chumming it up with prof, etc.

Send your materials to HR over the summer, but mention HIM prominently in the cover letter. That way if you are a contender for the position (or if they are even hiring for that matter), you can hope they just ask hey Mr. Biglaw Partner, do you remember Mr. lying gunner (no offense). Mr. Biglaw partner will so say "oh yeah, great guy/gal. S/he's got my approval!"

Then you got an interview, and lock it up from there. On top of this, Mr. Biglaw Partner isnt going to likely remember where you said you were working.

What exactly did you say to him?

I certainly do not think you should lie any further and should not have lied to begin with.

But this is a great networking opportunity, and if you play this correctly you won't need to do 3L OCI. If there is ANY way you can (without having to lie further) say that for whatever reasons, you're now looking in NYC, would he be willing to do a mock interview/does he know of anywhere still hiring, I definitely think you should.

The issue here is one of judgment and lack of understanding of how people work. Both necessary, imo, to be able to interview well.

OP was always going to shoot himself/herself in the foot.

I agree with this approach as the safest bet. But it relies on HR asking the partner/it's still a long shot. The better chance would have been to have the partner directly advocating for you, which OP has basically ensured will not happen through this lie.

he doesn't and won't care but you need to tamp down this instinct to lie for dumb reasons or you will end up disbarred

You should double down and put the fake job you didn't have on your resume.

I think you are boned. The story is awkward enough to have left an impression, and in my experience these dudes have pretty good memories. More importantly, you need to do something about your compulsion to lie.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
