Corp associate lateraling from out of state to CA

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Oct 19, 2015 11:27 pm

How often do Cali firms hire junior/midlevel corp associates from out of state? The only ties I have to Cali are 1) I like Cali, and 2) I went to Stanford for undergrad. I'm currently a second year at a V50 in a secondary market. I know Cali's 1st year biglaw hiring is atrociously bad, but what about the lateral market? I'd enjoy living anywhere in the state.

I don't care about prestige all that much. I could even be happy at a smaller non-vault shop. Okay, so what I'm really saying is I'd love to be at a "lifestyle" firm, near the beach, by the Pacific Coast Highway. Doesn't exist right?

And what about in-house? I'm assuming they're just looking for homegrown (or at least CA-licensed) folks?

Honestly don't know about lateral hiring, but I recommend that you don't call it "Cali" in interviews. People will automatically see you as an outsider.

It's not hard to lateral to CA corporate biglaw from out of state. Good luck finding a lifestyle firm though.

I think it's a lot easier than first year hiring. Would you really like living in the Central Valley though ("anywhere in the state"?) ? All of the nice places in CA are freaking expensive these days (and SF moreso than NYC).

I currently live in Texas and I would ideally like to be in a place that's an upgrade over Houston/Austin. Don't get me wrong, these are two very nice cities, with a ton of things going for them. But I miss California and I think the extra $1500 per month in rent justifies being somewhere that actually excites me.

That's fine. I'm just saying - many places in the United States are better than the Central Valley...lol.
