Anyone have experience lateraling to Covington?
I'm looking to make a move and they are on my list of possible places (DC office). I see they want a list of references, but wanting to keep my job search private for obvious reasons, I'd rather not have them contacting people at my current firm. If you've lateraled there (or attempted to), are they flexible about waiving this requirement or will they throw my resume in the trash if I don't provide the list?

I recently lateraled to different DC firm. They requested a list of references, but assured me that they would not contact them until I gave notice at my old firm and gave them the go ahead to call. Covington may do the same for you, I believe it is pretty standard.

Received a lateral offer from Cov. (Didn't end up going there). They won't call your references until after you give notice. This is standard practice for lateral hiring.

Makes sense. If some reference said "(s)he routinely blew deadlines" or something like that, it's a reason they'd want to rescind the offer. Obvious concern is that some ppl at the old firm would bad mouth you, but I guess that's on you for providing those ppl as references...Desert Fox wrote:So you can lose your offer if your references don't check out? Weird hiring practice.

Man.. I'd like to hear from the one guy or gal that had a great reference turn on em (b/c bitter about leaving) and then suddenly be out of two jobs.

It is a bit concerning. I'm pretty sure most of the partners in my practice group would be pissed about me leaving judging by the experience of those that have recently left the firm. It certainly limits the number of people that I can use as a reference.RaceJudicata wrote:Man.. Has anyone here not gotten an offer after references were called?
